Stila Description

Browse Stila's cosmetics collection, featuring makeup products created by professional artistry and a commitment to individual expression. Stila Cosmetics was founded in 1994 by makeup artist Jeanine Lobell, who had built her career working with celebrities including Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, and Nicole Kidman on countless Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Harper's Bazaar covers. The name Stila (pronounced STEE-la) was derived from the Swedish word "stil," meaning "style," though Lobell, who grew up in Sweden, has said they "kind of just made up the name."

The brand launched with samples shown to Barneys New York, which immediately placed an order, providing the validation that propelled Stila into the spotlight. Lobell developed innovative products that challenged the industry standards of the time, including being the first to introduce twisty lip glosses and cream blush compacts that opened like little books. The eyeshadows became legendary for their unique formulation approach: rather than simply blending matte colour with matching sparkle, Lobell would physically go to the lab and blend multiple dimensions of colour and shimmer, creating products with unprecedented depth. Estée Lauder Companies purchased Stila in 1999, five years after its founding, with Lobell remaining under a management contract for an additional five years.

The comprehensive collection includes products for eyes, cheeks, lips, face, and complexion perfection, all packaged in the brand's distinctive recycled materials with modern illustrated designs. Stila celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024, maintaining its reputation for innovative, multi-tasking formulas and fashion-forward colours that have earned recognition from beauty editors worldwide, proving that the brand's philosophy of making makeup as individual as each person's signature continues to resonate with consumers.
